Live updates: affordability is top-of-mind, Sacramento-area voters say

California voters Tuesday will elect their next governor, choose a new commissioner to oversee an insurance market fractured by wildfires and decide whether the state’s billionaires should pay an unprecedented, one-time wealth tax to backfill federal Medicaid cuts. From Folsom to Galt, voters will select city councilmembers to guide their tax dollars, police departments and infrastructure projects and approve or reject development proposals for the years to come. We’ll be here throughout the day and into the evening with early results and reporters’ dispatches from polling places and candidates’ watch parties. Check back with this live blog for news, and keep The Bee’s Voter Guide handy for last-minute ballot research. Welcome to Election Day. Update: 3:15 p.m. Tuesday Natomas residents weigh in on Hilton In Natomas Tuesday morning, voter Cheryl Gallon, 51, said she believed Steve Hilton would make California “go backwards.” First-time voter Rishal Prasad, 22, of Natomas, said he wasn’t passionate about either candidate running for the governor’s office. “I ended up picking one,” Prasad said. “It was kind of complicated this time.” Natomas resident Albert Marmolejo-Drake, 39, wants a drastic change in California. He voted for Hilton on the belief that the candidate could address high taxes

Cockroaches and rodent droppings were found at this Land Park seafood restaurant

Sacramento County Health Inspectors gave a red placard to an Arden Arcade Mexican restaurant after finding 175 “fresh” rodent droppings. Additionally, 15 eateries were cited for health food violations ranging from dented cans, slime buildup inside an ice machine and black residue accumulation in the ice cream cooler. What do these inspections mean? While a yellow placard signals two or more major violations, these are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection, according to the Sacramento County Retail Food Inspection Guide . A red placard, however, signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends an establishment’s health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination . In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed inspection. The county performs about 14,000 inspections annually and about 97% of establishments pass, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. Approximately 1% of inspections result in a closure, he said. These were the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Thursday, Oct. 22, through Wednesday, Oct. 28. If an inspection listed below needs clarification, business owners can email The Sacramento Bee at servicejournalists@sacbee.com . How to report a business to the health

Sacramento news roundup: Newsom names building after Dolores Huerta, Sikh Parade and more

From a state building renaming honoring a late labor icon to weekend festivities drawing hundreds of thousands, Friday brought several stories worth catching up on. Here’s a quick look at what’s happening around the Sacramento region. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Friday he is renaming the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency building after Dolores Huerta , the labor advocate who died this week at age 96 at her home in Bakersfield. About 2,500 people work in the 17-story, 657,000-square-foot building, which state workers moved into this January. The 2026 Sutter County Nagar Kirtan, better known as the Sikh Parade in Yuba City , begins at 10 a.m. Sunday, with sheriff’s officials expecting hundreds of thousands of attendees along a 4.5-mile route. Law enforcement is placing reference markers on telephone poles to help attendees pinpoint their location if they need emergency assistance. Runners planning to join a Sacramento-area turkey trot this Thanksgiving should sign up soon, as spots are filling fast and registration prices for many races go up after Oct. 31. Options include the Davis Turkey Trot, Run to Feed the Hungry in Sacramento, and events in Woodland, Roseville, Folsom, Granite Bay, Elk Grove and Lincoln benefiting local food banks
