Don't trash those campaign signs. Sacramento program keeps them out of the landfill

Although votes in California are still being counted, the 2026 midterm elections are done. For campaign staffers and volunteers, that means taking down and disposing of all those political signs. In Sacramento County, many of the campaign signs are made of thin plastic that is not recyclable. That means thousands of them are destined for the landfill. But one local organization has a solution. What do I do with a campaign sign after an election? On Saturday, Nov. 7, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento ReStore at 819 North 10th St. is hosting an upcycling event where people can drop off the signs or pick them up for reuse. “We did it the last six years, maybe eight years,” said organizer Gregg Fishman, who represents Ward 3 on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District Board of Directors. The Politics to Art initiative was launched after Fishman noticed how many campaign signs were winding up in the trash after each election. The recycling effort is co-sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, Atlas Disposal, Atrium Creative Innovation for Sustainability, and the National Stewardship Action Council. According to Fishman, who is awaiting final results of his own re-election bid , “campaign signs don’t recycle, and

With two-thirds support needed to pass, Sacramento City Unified's Measure M has slim lead

Early returns Tuesday evening showed Measure M, which needs a two-thirds approval to pass, trailing that mark significantly. As of about 10 p.m., 50.6% of counted votes favored the Sacramento City Unified School District’s proposed $95-per-parcel annual tax. The measure is projected to raise about $10 million a year for special education and early intervention programs. What is Measure M Sacramento City Unified spans much of Sacramento south of the American River, reaching east toward Rancho Cordova. If approved, Measure M would charge property owners $95 per parcel each year with exemptions available for some seniors and people receiving disability benefits. The district said the measure would help schools address students’ needs earlier, before those needs call for more intensive and expensive assistance. Measure M comes as SCUSD faces rising special education costs, a challenge shared by districts across California. The district is also grappling with a fiscal crisis with a structural deficit of about $222 million. Who supports it? Several labor groups have endorsed the measure, including the National Education Association, the California Teachers Association and the Sacramento City Teachers Association. Who opposes it? The California Association of Realtors-backed opposition has urged voters to reject Measure M, arguing that

Diwali celebrations on in Sacramento, despite state holiday legal challenges

For communities across Sacramento and California, Diwali — the ancient Hindu Festival of Lights — comes with its joyful tradition of illumination to symbolize good over evil, but this year’s celebration is marked with a shadow of disappointment. Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, Nov. 8, honoring lightness over darkness and knowledge over ignorance with joyful lights and bountiful feasts. More than a billion people of various faiths across India, southern Asia and the global diaspora celebrate Diwali annually. Celebrants had hoped it would be a state holiday, as well. Following the passage of Assembly Bill 268 last year, Diwali was supposed to be celebrated as such in California for the first time this November. However, legal challenges halted the law’s enforcement, leaving Diwali out of official celebrations in 2026. The governor’s office has appealed the decision and litigation is still pending. Regardless of its standing as a state holiday, the celebration goes on. “We have seen (the holiday law’s legal challenge), but it did not impact us,” according to Bhaskar Vempati, who organized a Diwali event in Rancho Cordova. “We thank California for the official recognition. It’s a powerful message that our culture is valued, and also that California

Sacramento Mayor McCarty to outline priorities in annual State of the City address

Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty will outline his priorities for the city’s future during his second State of the City address Thursday morning at the Crocker Art Museum. The event could offer a preview of major city initiatives and priorities for the coming year. Unlike traditional State of the City addresses, the event will feature a question-and-answer session with a yet-to-be-announced interviewer. Potential topics include homelessness, economic development and a projected $40 million city budget deficit. Facing a $66.2 million budget shortfall in 2026, the city avoided widespread layoffs by eliminating vacant positions, raising fees and cutting homelessness spending. Many of the cuts produced ongoing savings, but the city must increase revenue or make additional cuts to balance future budgets. Addressing homelessness was a central promise of McCarty’s 2024 mayoral campaign. McCarty touts “significant process” in sheltering homeless people, pointing to the opening of 500 new beds in his first 15 months as mayor and a 19% reduction of people living unsheltered within city limits between 2024 and 2026. His signature initiative has focused on expanding shelter capacity for unhoused residents. In the spring, the city opened a 96-bed safe camping site in the River District , but the mayor’s primary
