JoCo Sports Week 8 Football Preview: Clayton, Cleveland aim to stay unbeaten
It’s a simplistic headline, but one that accurately conveys the current state of Johnston County high school football. There are undefeated Clayton and Cleveland, and then the rest of the county sides on the wrong side of the .500 mark. Everyone not wearing a shade of blue has a combined 10-30 record, so when we talk about some dire and/or non-existent playoff chances, you’ll understand why.

High school football: Rose's two-way talent shining in 6-0 start to season
Given the embarrassment of riches J.H. Rose’s football team has, it could not be more appropriate that Daran Bell was the latest to answer the bell last Friday. He hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass on offense, and also intercepted two passes — the second of which he returned 50 yards for another touchdown — in the Rampants’ 43-0 victory over South Central in Winterville. The victory improved the Rampants’ record to a perfect 6-0 and 1-0 in the Big Carolina 6A/7A Conference. “He’s one of our best wide receivers, and just showed that he can play both ways,” J.H. Rose coach Will Bland said after the game. “It’s something special about these kids that go night in, night out and play offense and defense and never get tired.” On the touchdown offensively, in which Bell took the pass from quarterback Chase Davis and sprinted down the left sideline, Bell said all he saw was one defender — whom he eluded — and the end zone. Bell’s interception return for a touchdown wasn’t just caught but literally snatched out of the air shortly after the ball left the throwing hand of South Central quarterback Jaylen Butts. “I saw the running

High school football: Rose runs away from Falcons, improves to perfect 6-0
J.H. Rose’s football team turned four touchdowns in a five-minute span into its sixth win of the season to stay undefeated on Friday night. The Rampants erupted for 27 points in a span of 4:59 in the second quarter to beat the Falcons 43-0 in a Big Carolina 6A/7A Conference matchup at The Nest. “Once the coaches start clicking and the players start trusting the guys, we’ve just got to get the ball in the playmakers’ hands and things happen,” J.H. Rose coach Will Bland said. J.H. Rose (6-0, 1-0 BCC), which recorded its second shutout this season and is yielding just over 12 points per game, was ranked No. 19 in the latest HighSchoolOT.com poll, and the Falcons found out why. The Rampants’ Daran Bell caught a touchdown pass on offense, then had two interceptions on defense, the second of which he returned 50 yards for another score. During the second-quarter outburst, the Rampants took two plays on a short field to score their first touchdown, followed it with a tip-drill interception that was returned for a touchdown, then scored on consecutive possessions — on their first offensive play — during that five-minute span. After both teams failed to
