As dollar stores continue rural expansion, a Louisiana parish found a new way to push back
Dollar stores have become such common sights in the South that residents, like Randy Bush, can rattle them off like box scores. From the front porch of his house just outside Ponchatoula, Louisiana, he gestures toward the Family Dollar that’s west of Highway 22. There’s a Dollar General just off Interstate 55 and two more along Pumpkin Center Road. Altogether, across an eight-mile stretch that’s otherwise mostly made up of houses and subdivisions, Bush counts six dollar stores.
PLD v. ARBC turf war over Bayou Manchac drainage project
All of the interested parties seem in agreement, Bayou Manchac Regional Flood Risk Reduction is a project worth getting done, and the sooner the better. Two multi-parish agencies (Pontchartrain Levee District and Amite River Basin Commission) have publicly prioritized the project, the latter excluded from participation until PLD approves it. Starting to seem like a turf war, ARBC is without ammunition even while it has funding to begin the project.
Gonzales hosts Pelican Classic All-Breed Dog Show at Lamar Dixon
GONZALES — Another dog show is coming to the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales this weekend. The Pelican Classic All-Breed Dog Show hosted by the Northlake Kennel Club of Greater Covington kicks off Friday and runs through Sunday at Lamar Dixon's REV Center. Judging starts each morning at 8:30.
