Bryant corrals three good finishes for East at state track and field meet
GREENSBORO — Janara Bryant earned three top-10 finishes on Friday in the 2A state track and field meet at the Marcus T. Johnson Track at North Carolina A&T University. The East Carteret senior took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 inches, placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.27 seconds and claimed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 35-3.

Bogue town council reviews 2024-25 budget that paves road, gives raise to town clerk
BOGUE — The Bogue town council reviewed a $290,520 proposed 2024-25 budget May 20 that paves the last town-owned road, and offers a 3% raise to the town clerk. However, that original figure was changed May 21 to $238,131 after the clerk said she discovered an inadvertent clerical error and made adjustments for her raise that was approved during the May 20 meeting.

The 2023-2024 high school sports calendar officially came to an end on Monday, but there are plenty of competitions quickly around the corner. The Morehead City Marlins will begin their 14th season of play in the Coastal Plain League on Thursday with a trip to Wilson to take on the Tobs. The Fish will host their first home game of the baseball season on Puck O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium on Friday versus the Wilmington Sharks.

East senior Bryant earns four medals at regional track and field meet
KINSTON — Janara Bryant followed a fantastic league outdoor track and field meet with a standout performance at the regional competition. The East Carteret senior collected three golds and one silver in the 1A/2A Coastal Plains Conference championship and then produced a gold, silver and two bronzes at the 2A regional meet.
Humane Society spruces up, prepares for ribbon cutting
NEWPORT — A facelift of sorts is under way at the Carteret County Humane Society (CCHS) Animal Shelter on Hibbs Road. From installing a “catio,” which is an outdoor aerial catwalk, to painting and installing new fencing, the nonprofit animal shelter is holding a ribbon cutting 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on June 5 to showcase some of the improvements. The Carteret County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event.
