MARSHALL — Keyanna Rank homered and Lakeside’s softball team picked up its fourth victory this season over a ranked foe, topping ninth-ranked Marshall 5-1 on the road in nonconference play on Wednesday, May 1.

“We picked up another win tonight against a solid Marshall team,” Lakeside softball coach Matt Doering said. “The girls are just working hard and doing the simple things well over the last stretch of games. It’s an exciting stretch of softball. Keyanna’s home run was the big spark for us.”

Rank’s two-run blast to right field came with one out in the third inning on a first pitch to give the Warriors, who have won four straight, a 2-0 lead.

Lakeside (8-6) got four consecutive singles by Emma Smulders, Kieghtan Rank, Abby Meis and Keyanna Rank to open the fifth. Meis and Keyanna Rank’s hits to right field plated single runs to make it 4-1. Emma Wunderlich capped the rally with a run-scoring single of her own.

Kieghtan Rank pitched the distance to earn the decision, allowing a run on two hits with five strikeouts, no walks.

TUESDAY’S RESULTLODI — Lakeside Lutheran’s softball upended sixth-ranked Lodi 6-2 in Capitol North play on Tuesday, April 30.

The Warriors (7-6, 2-4 in conference) struck first as winning pitcher Kieghtan Rank reached on an error. Her courtesy runner Lora Kasper came around on Abby Meis’ RBI single.

Lodi scored on a run in the first on Bailey Stark’s RBI single before Marah Lane hit a solo homer in the second.

Lakeside took over from there, using a three-run rally in the third to take the lead for good, 4-2. Meis doubled to put a pair of runners in scoring position for Keyanna Rank, who lined a two-run triple to right field. Her courtesy runner Paige Lester scored on Emma Wunderlich’s ground out.

“Timely hitting in the first four innings got us a lead and we played well defensively again to get the win over a surging Lodi team,” Lakeside softball coach Matt Doering said. “Four different hitters had two hits, including Keyanna Rank who had a double and triple.”

Kieghtan Rank retired 10 straight Lodi hitters to end the game. She went the distance, allowing two earned on five hits with six strikeouts, no walks.

“Kieghtan scattered five hits and struck out six to keep the game in control,” Doering said. “We have a mini streak going and will look to keep playing well with two more games this week.”
