The Marshall High School boys basketball program is under new leadership. TJ Zweifel, who has led Belleville High School since the 2021-22 season, has been approved by the school board as the new head coach of the Cardinals.

Marshall athletic director Matt Kleinheinz announced the decision following a school board meeting on Wednesday, May 1.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have TJ joining our staff," Kleinheinz said. "Obviously his track record in the Capitol - South conference sticks out but what impressed us the most was his commitment and attention to detail in the hopes of developing the whole Marshall basketball program down into the youth levels, not just the high school varsity team. We have a very rich basketball tradition here at Marshall and TJ is a tremendous fit for us to continue, and even enhance, that tradition.”

Zweifel brings a trend of success with him from his stint as Belleville's head coach. His Wildcats won the Capitol - South conference title in each of his three seasons at the helm. He also led the Wildcats to a Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) sectional final in the 2022-23 season.

Zweifel’s enthusiasm for the program is abundant. “I’m very excited and eager to get the ball rolling at such a historic program," he said. "Coaching in the Capitol - South for the past few years, I’m very familiar with the Marshall tradition and talent within the program. Hopefully we can get to work and achieve some lofty goals that will be in place from day 1.”

Zwerifel added, “Throughout the process, the Marshall family atmosphere stuck out as something I want to be a part of. Everyone has been receptive to my coaching style, stylistic beliefs, and philosophical views on what I can bring to Marshall basketball. Their belief in me and what our program can be will help this group push forward with confidence to sustain and continue to build on the foundation already set. I can’t wait to get to work!”

He’ll inherit a veteran Marshall squad that returns its top 6 scorers from last season's regional championship team. The Cardinals have won 3 straight WIAA regional championships under former coach Dan Denniston, highlighted by the team's run to the Kohl Center in the 2021-22 season. Denniston announced his coaching retirement shortly after the season to spend more time with his family.
