According to the office of Marion County Prosecutor Ray Grogan, between Dec. 1, 2022, and April 4, 2023, Swartz, the victim’s son Joel R. Andrick, and Swartz’s live-in boyfriend Reginald A. Burlile subjected the victim to neglect that eventually led to her death.
Grogan said the woman suffered from extreme malnutrition and weighed 84 pounds with no food in her stomach or intestines at the time of her autopsy. The victim also suffered from large bedsores which were infected with live insects which led to sepsis, the cause of her death, Grogan said.
Andrick, who pleaded guilty to third-degree felony reckless homicide, was sentenced to two years in prison. Burlile, who also pleaded guilty to third-degree felony reckless homicide, is scheduled to be sentenced on May 10.
“These guilty pleas are a culmination of a thorough investigation and prosecution, underscoring the seriousness with which our community treats the care of its most vulnerable members,” Grogan said in a press release. “The conditions in which this elderly woman was forced to live are horrifying, and the guilty pleas reflect our resolve to hold those responsible accountable.”
