Marine girls turn Waupaca into Comet dust

WAUPACA, Wis. — The Marinette High School softball team swept a twin bill at Waupaca in emphatic fashion on Friday.

The Marines took game one 19-2 and game two 15-6 to leapfrog the Comets in the North Eastern Conference standings.

In both games, the Marinette offense put up an explosive inning while racking up 22 hits on the season.

Wynn Erdman handled the pitching duties in game one and delivered seven strong innings allowing just two unearned runs. The senior hurler scattered seven hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Meanwhile, the Marines, who have been snake bitten by errors this season, committed only one defensive miscue.

Marinette led 5-0 before Waupaca plated two unearned runs in the fifth inning, but the Marines added one more in the fifth and then went off for 13 runs in the seventh inning.

Erdman also got the job done at the plate with a four-hit day, going 4-for-6 with three RBI.

Destiny Walker went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

Marinette played as the home team in game two.

The bats stayed hot, putting up three runs in the first inning in support of Bri Adamski.

Waupaca battled back with a run in the second, three in the third and two in the fifth to lead 6-3, but the Marines hit it big again in the fifth inning plating nine runs.

Adamski tossed all seven innings, allowing two earned runs while the defense made just two mistakes behind her. She allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six Comets.

After pounding out 15 hits in game one, the Marines needed only seven safeties to plate their 15 runs in game two, thanks to a dozen free passes issued by Waupaca pitching.

Walker collected four of those seven hits, going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored

Regan Hermanson drove in three runs and Adamski knocked in two more to key the offensive effort.

Marinette improved to 4-9 on the season and 4-9 in conference play, passing the Comets in the NEC standings as Waupaca fell to 6-11 overall and 3-10 in league play.
