A hate speech campaign comes to Monterey City Hall.
When members of Monterey City Council and the public gathered in the council chambers in Colton Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 19 for a meeting, everything seemed normal. The night’s business included a discussion on the city’s housing element – a plan for how to incorporate 3,654 new residential units by 2031 – which drew plenty of public interest. People standing in the chamber spoke at the podium. Others called in remotely. Then things went off the rails as comment after comment – 13 in total – veered away from the housing element and into blatant racism and anti-Semitism. The callers, unnamed and anonymous, lobbed slurs that have no place in civil society. Mayor Tyller Williamson stopped public comment amid the onslaught and apologized to the listening public for the hate they’d just heard. The City Council tabled the important business before them.

Best Grocery Store (2023)
15 Soledad Drive, Monterey, (831) 373-3737, elroysfinefoods.com. Elroy’s Fine Foods takes the boutique concept and applies it to the grocery store – carefully curating fresh produce, high-end meats, poultry, cheese and shelf goods, and a diverse selection of wines both local and international. It’s a joy to shop there, which is why Weekly readers have consistently awarded Elroy’s with a Best Of label since the shop opened in the fall of 2020. And as you wind your way out of the beautifully appointed aisles, don’t sleep on the prepared food section – Elroy’s makes healthy, hearty soups, salads and sandwiches you’ll feel good about eating on days when a DIY lunch (or dinner) plan just isn’t coming together.
Best Place To Go Along For The Ride (2023)
Gloria Jean Tate Park, 3254 Abdy Way, Marina, (831) 884‑1253, cityofmarina.org. In 2023 on one side of the Peninsula, a city council shot down a proposed skate park project, bumming out the parents, teens, and kids who had worked and lobbied hard. In another city, the 6‑year‑long development of a similar recreational park was unveiled. At Gloria Jean Tate Park in Marina, three tracks offer people on bikes, skateboards and scooters the chance to roll up and down a series of berms – go down one side of the mound you gain momentum to cruise on up the next. New to this concept? You can cut your pump track teeth on the beginner track. The first of its kind in Monterey County, this project is celebrated (and widely used) by Marina residents, bikers, skaters, and scooter operators from around the county.
Woman who vanished in Big Sur still missing 1 year later
(KRON) — A young Salinas woman vanished in Big Sur one year ago and Monterey County officials are asking for the public’s help to find her. Arelie Garcia, 25, was last seen on the morning of September 22, 2022, when she left her home on Roosevelt Street. Shortly after 6:30 a.m., she sent her sister a text message telling her that she was on her way to work. “However, she never arrived at her place of employment. Her family reported her missing later that evening,” the Salinas Police Department wrote.
Best Place To Work (2023)
23625 Highway 68, Monterey, (831) 624‑5311, montagehealth.org. We’re a little biased at the Weekly, because it’s a really good place to work. But CHOMP – the wonderful acronym for Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula – clearly has us beat. Besides a healthy environment and good benefits, the Montage Health facility offers perks such as a great cafeteria serving the best milkshakes in the entire county (see Specialty Foods for proof). That’s why the doctors and nurses we depend on stay on, year after year. So CHOMP being the best place to work is good for all of us.
Best Neighborhood Bar (2023)
877 Broadway Ave., Seaside (831) 747‑1106, otherbrotherbeer.com. There’s something different about this place. Perhaps that’s why it’s the “other” brother. What that means in this case is, unlike a lot of watering holes on the Monterey Peninsula that fill up with tourists (not a bad thing), Other Brother is a place where one can almost always find a table, and even if everyone doesn’t know your name (or, more likely, even if no one knows your name), it has a vibe that feels like home. Its capacious interior with high ceilings gives the spot an airy feel, and the garage‑door‑style sliding windows bordering the sidewalk are usually open when the weather ain’t foul. And by the sidewalk, there’s a parklet that makes for some great people – and car‑watching while hanging with your besties. And did we forget to mention that the beer is really good? It’s no surprise Other Brother wins in this category. No‑brainer.
Best Place For A Business Lunch (2023)
2999 Highway 68, Del Rey Oaks, (831) 647‑1444, tarpys.com. A short drive west from the Pastures of Heaven lies Tarpy’s Roadhouse. Housed in a building constructed when Steinbeck was a teenager, Tarpy’s remains the county’s most popular choice for a business lunch. Equidistant from the bustling hospitality business on the Peninsula and the ag giants of Salinas, Tarpy’s is the perfect place to meet for a great meal in a convenient location, either indoors in the classy dining room, or on the charming stone patio. Originally opened in 1992, Tarpy’s offers a versatile menu and a stable of choice steak options along with a great selection of wines, beer and cocktails.
Best Fry Of A Quintessential Local Fish (2023)
422 Tyler St., Monterey, (831) 655‑8108, epsilonrestaurant.com. One of John Steinbeck’s hobbies was fly fishing, but we like to think he and his best friend Ed Ricketts spent some time fishing in Monterey Bay. Among the many fish available for them to catch includes Pacific sand dabs. The small and quirky‑looking flat fish are ubiquitous on restaurant menus on the Monterey Peninsula. They have a delicate taste that is both slightly sweet and salty. The best way to prepare them is with a little seasoning, a fine coating of flour or breadcrumbs then frying in a pan or on a flat top grill. It sounds simple but sometimes the simplest cooking methods can go haywire and instead of delightfully crispy, you get soggy. While most local restaurants do right by the sand dab, the best filets we’ve eaten are at Epsilon. Epsilon’s sand dabs, with just the right amount of seasoning and crispiness, are perfectly served on top of a Greek salad. Opa‑licious!

Best Orthodontist (2023)
780 E. Romie Lane, Suite G, Salinas, (831) 422-7424, ronconiorthodontics.com. Dr. Matthew Ronconi is well loved by his patients who give him and his staff high marks for making them feel welcomed and comfortable. He works to see that each patient gets just the right treatment, be it traditional braces, Invisalign, ceramic braces, retainers or other methods, then follows through to make sure they’re satisfied with the end result. Besides taking good care of patients, Dr. Ronconi is active in the community, having served as president of the Monterey Bay Dental Society in 2022 and working as a volunteer trainer of puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. That’s something to smile about.
Best Fried Chicken That Most Of Us Will Never Get To Try (2023)
100 Pasadera Drive, Monterey, (831) 647‑2400, theclubatpasadera.com. Great fried chicken is readily available. Just drop in on The Butter House in Seaside. But let’s talk forbidden fruit – or more accurately, forbidden chicken. Chef Colin Moody does not prepare church basement‑style chicken, and yet his bird owes much to classic Southern fare. But here’s the departure: Moody’s chicken wings. They are presented as traditional fried chicken, with a crackling crust and juicy white meat. There is, however, no sauce – the batter is seasoned in such a way that heat, smoke, pepper and dusky spice spill out over your palate. Of course, you have to be a member or invited guest of the Club at Pasadera to sample the chef’s fare. Luckily, there are less exclusive options.
Best Blues Club (2023)
500 Broadway Ave., Seaside, (831) 324‑0044, dejabluelive.com. With his novel The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck painted a truly dire portrait of scores of people hoping to remove themselves from the calamity that was the Dust Bowl, a series of severe dust storms over the drought‑stricken southern plains of the U.S. during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Hopefully no one reading this has the blues on such a big scale as that, but the blues do come in all shapes and sizes. If that resonates with you, head on over to this big‑time blues, jazz and comedy club for some real relief via solid live blues and other music, great cocktails and a soul food menu including braised oxtail, jalapeño hushpuppies and shrimp, grits and eggs to set things just right.
