Top-seeded Miami Christian proved to be simply too much for the Marathon High softball team in the District 16-3A semifinals, rolling to a 17-2 victory on Tuesday, April 30, but before the Lady ‘Fins had their season came to an end they were able to scratch out a 7-6 walk-off victory against Mater Academy Bay in the quarterfinals on Monday, April 29, on the Florida Christian campus.
During the quarterfinal victory, the Lady ‘Fins struck first on singles by Madelyn Thornton and Meave Merryman in the second, but the Rays would go in front scoring three times in the top of the fourth. Marathon responded in the bottom of the frame when Shynell McGuire singled, a two-run double by Elena Eubank, and two Mater Academy errors to put them back in the lead.
A sacrifice fly by Eubank and a triple off the bat of Sara Robinson bumped the Marathon advantage to three runs, but that would be erased in the seventh when Mater Academy plated a trio of runs to bring the score back even at 6-all.
In the final swing of the contest, McGuire tripled to lead off the bottom of the seventh then came home for the walk-off winner on a sacrifice fly by Merryman. Only four of the runs scored against Marathon starting pitcher Allison Garcia were earned as she gave up six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
A day later, Marathon was unable to collect any hits versus Miami Christian, coming home on a pair of bases-loaded walks in the third, but by that point, the Lady ‘Fins were already behind 10 runs and allowed seven more in the bottom of the frame, which brought the game to an early end via the Florida High School Athletic Association 15-run mercy rule as well as the season for Marathon (10-5 overall).
