Eugene police chief, city manager sing '80s tunes in carpool karaoke
Eugene Police Department Chief Chris Skinner and Eugene City Manager Jenny Haruyama recently tried their hands at carpool karaoke. The 8-minute video posted to social media platforms, including Facebook, on Sept. 24 shows Skinner picking up Haruyama and driving around downtown Eugene near City Hall. On the road, the two shared nostalgic memories about their youth and sang along to several hits from the 1980s. EPD spokesperson Chelsea Deffenbacher said via email the video was originally meant to give city staff a glimpse into Skinner and Haruyama's personalities, but the public post has allowed the broader community to see their non-professional sides, behind their rank and job title. "I also believe it’s important that we find joy in our work and having fun amidst a heavy job, which is good for overall professional balance," Skinner said. Carpool Karaoke began trending in the 2010s, when it became a recurring segment on "The Late Late Show with James Corden." The segment saw Cordon invite famous musicians to sing their favorite tunes with the talk show host. Although none of the police departments that EPD tagged in its Facebook post have posted their own rendition, Eugene isn't the first city to put its

Eugene mom's bodybuilding discipline powers her career, inspires daughter
Every day, Alejandra Collazo Gonzalez lugs a gallon of water to her office at Lane Community College where she downs it all throughout the workday. After balancing the books on LCC's budget team, Collazo Gonzalez, 38, hits the gym every week night — a nod to her history of bodybuilding and powerlifting competition days. Her personal records include a 245-lbs. squat when Collazo Gonzalez weighed just 120 lbs. Collazo Gonzalez has taken a step back from competition, but still keeps up her strength. "I think as a woman, it's very empowering," Collazo Gonzalez said. "When you're very low-calorie and you're still having to go to the gym, you just muster whatever energy you can, including coffee, during that time. It's very challenging and I think that that has allowed me to continue to take on challenges." Collazo Gonzalez has been working off-and-on in LCC's budget team four years and has held her role as a senior budget analyst for four years, but her history with the college goes back even further. Building strength physically and mentally Collazo Gonzalez grew up in Vancouver, Washington. In 2014, she moved to Eugene at age 26 and decided to enroll in LCC. Collazo Gonzalez
