After losing two straight to begin 2024, the Maple Grove baseball team had a chance to get back to .500 when the Crimson hosted St. Michael-Albertville on Monday. The Knights were searching for their first win of the season.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning but after a scoreless second frame, the Crimson scored six runs over the next three innings to get back to an even 2-2 this year. With the loss, STMA fell to 0-3 this season.

The Knights scored 11 runs on 10 hits during a 15-11 loss to Minnetonka on April 12 but have a combined one run on seven hits in two losses to Wayzata and Maple Grove.

CJ Splettstoesser was 3-for-3 with a walk and six RBIs against the Skippers. Noah Miller was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and 2 RBIs. Drew Luster was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Taylan Siens (two), Thomas Ohotto and Ryan Williamson also scored runs for the Knights.

Against Maple Grove on Monday, Luster started the scoring with a solo homer in the top of the first. Maple Grove tied the game on a fielder’s choice during the bottom of the first. Connor Johnson hit a grounder to shortstop Siens. Siens flipped it to Ohotto for the force at second while Nathan Schmidt scored for Maple Grove.

After taking a 2-1 lead during the bottom of the third, Maple Grove found some breathing room in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from Kaden Harney and Berglin made it a 3-1 ballgame. With two outs, Vann Olson drew a walk and then Schmidt scored Berglin with an RBI single. Shimpa drew a bases-loaded walk that made it 5-1.

During the bottom of the fifth, Maple Grove added two more runs and won 7-1. Berglin scored Williamson with an RBI double and later in the inning Schmidt drew another bases-loaded walk.

Schmidt was 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, two runs scored and two RB for Maple Grove. Berglin was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI himself. Sam Hagen earned the win on the mound after allowing one run on two hits over five innings and four strikeouts. Shimpa pitched two shutout innings out of the pen.

Zach Zanetti was 1-for-3 for STMA. Luster was 1-for-3 with the solo home run. Lincoln Tangen was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. The Knights combined to hit just 4-for-25 against the Crimson. Ryley Wuebkers took the loss after allowing five runs in 3.2 innings off of six hits and two walks. He did strike out five. Lincoln Rick pitched an inning of relief and James Fry got the final four outs.

STMA played Buffalo on Wednesday, after press deadline. On Friday, April 19, the Knights host Hopkins at 4:30 p.m. On Monday, April 22, St. Michael-Albertville has a road game against Sartell and another road game against Edina on Friday, April 26.
