Tillamook Girl Scouts compete at regional contest
Over the weekend of May 17-19, Girl Scout Troop 13020 competed in eight different challenges at a long-standing event called “Tambu.” Troops of middle and high schoolers from all over Oregon and SW Washington battled for points in knots & lashing, fire building, Dutch Oven cooking, campsite set-up, and more. In their rookie year at the competition, the troop took home 2nd place ribbons in the First Aid scenarios and the Campfire Dessert challenge. They worked together under the watchful eye of a judging panel to build a charcoal fire and bake a strawberry rhubarb crisp in a Dutch Oven, with bonus points for incorporating a mystery ingredient. The troop is in their sixth year together and is comprised of 7th-9th graders from Tillamook County. Troop 13020 is seeking additional members to compete in 2025. The tree was officially declared dead in 1963, and disappeared sometime in the 1980s. According to a July 1974 article in the Seaside Signal: “The Indian Wedding Tree stands at the foot of Adams Street in Cannon Beach. Legend has it that area Native Americans were married under its drooping branches, which formed a ring around the couple. Now weather-beaten and deteriorating, the tree holds its ground precariously.”
