One woman was hospitalized and another is facing several charges following a wreck in Manteo.

Shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2024, a traffic wreck occurred on U.S. 64 in Manteo at the McDonald’s.

The driver of a black Honda Civic was traveling southbound on U.S 64 and crossed the center and the northbound lanes. The vehicle hit the curb, became airborne, hit two crepe myrtle trees, and came to rest against a light pole on the grass in front of McDonald’s.

The car was exceeding the posted speed; Manteo Police Chief Brad Eilert estimates the speed at 50 miles per hour in the town’s 35 mile per hour zone.

A 28-year old female passenger sustained serious injuries and was flown to a medical facility. As of Saturday afternoon, she is reported to be in stable condition. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, Renee C. Matson, 31, from Jarvisburg, was wearing a seat belt.

Matson was charged with one felony, serious injury by vehicle, four misdemeanors and two infractions as follows: misdemeanors driving while impaired, driving while license revoked under a previous impaired revocation, expired registration and possession of drug paraphernalia, and infractions exceeding posted speed and failure to maintain lane. The nature of the impairment was drug related, said the chief.

Chief Eilert expressed thanks to deputies with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office and the State Highway Patrol for assistance with the investigation.

Bond for Matson was set at $40,000.
