MANDAN, ND ( KXNET ) — The Morton Mandan Public Library is inviting local groups and patrons to fill one of their eight planters with whatever plants they want ( with a few exceptions ) this summer.

Each planter will feature a sign, showcasing whoever has adopted it.

The library will provide the soil, and library staff will water the plants daily — anyone interested in adopting will only need to donate plants and provide any other upkeep they are willing to volunteer.

Benefits and tips for starting a garden

    Regulations:

    • Aside from the initial cost of the plants, this is completely free.
    • All plants should be planted between May 23 and June 3 so they have all summer to flourish.
    • The library only has two rules on what is planted for safety concerns:
      1. To protect the environment : do not plant anything that is invasive to the library’s growing zone, in case they spread. (see NDSU’s Guide to Noxious and Troublesome Weeds as a starting point)
      2. To protect the library: do not plant anything illegal on public property (examples: tobacco, cannabis)

Note: The library reserves the right to remove any plants that violate the above regulations without warning. The library cannot give any guarantees for protecting the plants from damage by vandalism, animals, or extreme weather.

    Planter Specifics:

    • All planters have the same dimensions of 56 in x 12 in, with about 18 in of soil (the soil does not go all the way to the bottom of the planter).
    • All planters are around the parking lot side of the building, and as such they face southwest with Full Sun.

The library cautions that the concrete will warm up quite a bit in the sun, so it’s a good idea to choose drought-resistant plants.
