Illinois’ only Native American reservation is celebrated at Northwestern University’s Center for Native American and Indigenous Research Symposium. Keynote speakers Zach Pahmahmie (left) and Raphael Wahwassuck explained how their Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation’s 130-acre parcel in DeKalb County was officially recognized as a reservation by the federal government last month. The Potawatomi land was originally 1,280 acres, but it was confiscated in 1850. “We are in the process of getting the remainder recognized as a reservation and returned back to us,” said Pahmahmie.
