Another downtown Albuquerque restaurant suffers

Albuquerque, NM (KKOB) –Erin Wade, the owner of the downtown restaurant Vinaigrette, has announced that the restaurant will be closing down on Nov. 5th – either for good or at least temporarily. She has referenced a number of issues regarding the closure, including staffing concerns, inflation, and changing consumer habits as the reasons behind the decision. However, leaders with the New Mexico Restaurant Association say there’s another obvious reason. NMRA CEO Carol Wight says “we’ve got to get the crime under control or we’re gonna continue to lose businesses.” That thought backed up by the latest data from Colliers via Albuquerque Business First, shows downtown Albuquerque is facing an 18-percent vacancy rate for retail spaces. That’s compared to just a 0.7-percent rate in the uptown neighborhood.

Before writing any of my missives, especially about a restaurant from a culinary culture about which I have not previously written, I take inventory of what I know about that culture. The September, 2026 launch of Street & Spice provided the opportunity to assess what I knew about Indonesia. It wasn’t a very long list. Undoubtedly the coolest thing (to me, at least) about Indonesia is that some of its islands are home to the Komodo dragon, a large lizard-like apex predator that may have inspired Star Trek’s “Gorn.” I also knew that Indonesia is made up of about 17,500 islands. One of those islands was Krakatoa where an erupting volcano generated the loudest sound in history (yes, even louder than the screeching on The View).
