The Madras boys and girls tennis squads both got victories over The Dalles Thursday, May 2.

In a dual on the Madras courts, the MHS boys cruised to a 7-1 win, taking all of the singles matches and three of the four doubles matches.

The girls squad traveled to The Dalles and came home with a 5-3 victory. The Buffs won three of four singles matches then split the four doubles faceoffs.

In the 7-1 win, the top two matches were tough ones. Fernando Saldana beat Hector Moralez of The Dalles in a thriller, 6-3, 4-6, 11-9, in No. 1 singles. Keith Charley III, at No. 2 singles, came back to beat Jonathan Rodriguez 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Phillip Arther had no trouble beating Dante Kim at No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-3, and the Buffs’ Dereck Salgado had an even easier match, beating Eden Rodriguez 6-0, 6-0.

The Madras top doubles team, Juan Olivera and Matias Ruiz Jr., beat Henry Perez and Jack McCallister 6-2, 7-6 (5). In No. 2 doubles, the Riverhawks got their lone victory as Bryson Seibert and Carter Randall edged David Diaz and Isidro Olivera 6-4, 6-3.

Brody Leonard and Manny Mesina got the win for Madras at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-3, and Heber Pineda and Theo Miller cruised to the No. 4 win 6-4, 6-1.

    Lady Buffs’ victory

The Buffs may have escaped The Dalles with a 5-3 win, but it was a battle.

In No. 1 singles, Mia Mitchell had to rally back from a 2-6 opening set loss to win the next two sets 6-4, 10-6 over Josephine Hamm. The Riverhawks then won the No. 2 singles match when Alexia Diaz topped Nancy Quinto 6-2, 6-1. The Buffs, though, got the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, which were both tight. Cypress Toman beat Yamari Santillan in the closest match of the day, 7-6, 6-7, 10-7. Olyvyah Pacheco dropped Aimie Rodriquez-Sanchez 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles action, The Dalles won No. 1 when Jessica Huizar-Perez and Ari Chavez-Rodriquez topped the Buffs’ Heidi Sedano and Idaly Romero 4-6, 7-5, 10-3. The Buffalos’ Myah Pope and Hayley Burts righted the ship with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win at No. 2 doubles.

The Dalles took the No. 3 doubles match when Victoria Gonzalez and Valeria Villa topped the Buffs’ Yashira Chavaro and Arely Alonso 6-2, 7-5. But the difference between going to a 4-4 tiebreaker and the outright 5-3 win came at No. 4 doubles, where Diana Melo Reyes and Ana Olivares beat Cynthia Ibarra and Amber Foley of The Dalles 6-1, 6-2.
