Discussions continue between campus protesters, UW leaders

MADISON, Wis. -- Saturday marked the fifth day of the presence of protesters camped on Library Mall on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.

Representatives of the protesters met once again with top UW leaders Saturday, the fourth such meeting. The two sides did not come to a resolution to end the protest.

In a statement, UW said campus leaders agreed to refrain from asking the UW Police Department to clear the encampment, if productive discussions continue. The school said that in the event of a public safety concern or an emergency, UWPD "will exercise its authority to keep the campus community safe."

The school said that the student protest leaders proposed bringing a set of suggested guidelines related to Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association investments to the next meeting. But campus officials made no commitments about disclosure of investments or divestment during the meeting because WFAA is a separate, independent non-profit organization.

Following the meeting, campus leaders agreed to another meeting with student protest leaders. A date and time for that meeting was not immediately disclosed.

Four people who were arrested and booked into the Dane County Jail after police broke up an encampment on the UW-Madison campus Wednesday morning were formally charged on Friday.

Meanwhile, a group of Dane County Board Supervisors sent an open letter to Sheriff Kalvin Barrett on Thursday, asking him to not use county resources to break up ongoing protests on the UW-Madison campus.
