MADISON, Wis. -- A new version of Madison's draft West Area Plan would shift a north-south bike path out of the Sauk Creek Greenway and onto existing streets, District 9 Alder Nikki Conklin said Monday.

The path was a point of contention among resident in the area, who were worried about the environmental effects it would have on the greenway. It's just one of several objects to the plan that west side residents have raised since the plan was released in February .

"I see the beauty and want to maintain the natural feel of the greenway for all of the surrounding communities to enjoy," Conklin said. "I am advocating to relocate this bike path to streets so we can have both a natural area and a strong bike network."

While the north-south path will be moved out of the greenway, Conklin said that the plan will include a short east-west path through the greenway that would connect neighborhoods on the west side of the area to Walnut Grove Park and the east side of the greenway.

Conklin said Madison's Planning Division is expected to announce a revised draft West Area Plan later this week.
