MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Police Department provided an update Tuesday on the weekend stabbing on the near west side, saying it stemmed from an altercation between two people.

It was Monday morning when MPD arrested a 66 year-old woman on charges of first degree attempted homicide.

Police were alerted to the Sunday morning incident, being directed to the victim located at Meriter Hospital. "They were told that a woman arrived and at the hospital with stab wounds and that an investigation would probably need to be done," said public information officer Stephanie Fryer. She spoke to News 3 Now Tuesday afternoon shedding more light on the case.

She says while police found the victim at Meriter Hospital, they determined the altercation took place at the 700 block of Braxton Pl., just a few blocks east of Meriter.

Further interviews and investigating have since concluded the incident was targeted. Fryer says a man and the female suspect knew the victim.

"[They] had a common relationship with the same gentleman and so at this point there was a kind of altercation inside a vehicle and then that's what lead to that victim being stabbed," said Fryer.

Neighbors News 3 Now spoke with Tuesday declined to talk on camera, but say they have never heard of such an event like this here before. In the days since the attack, the victim has gone home from the hospital. MPD continues to work to connect with here to get further details about what exactly transpired.

MPD is also continuing to ask the public to come forward with any relevant information by contacting them directly or by sending an anonymous tip to Madison Area Crime Stoppers at p3tips.com
