MADISON, Conn. (WTNH) – Some of the youngest students in Madison are tapping into their inner peace to succeed in the classroom.

“We were doing mindful breathing and finding our anchor spot on our belly and focusing on our thoughts,” said second-grader Tristan Burk.

Hands raised when their minds wandered and they learned to bring it back.

Youth Development Coordinator for Madison Youth & Family Services Amy Delucia-Ferri said it’s an empowerment practice.

“We can let things go that are unhelpful and foster other emotions and mind states that are helpful,” Delucia-Ferri said.

Fifth-graders at Ryerson Elementary in Madison practice mindfulness on a regular basis. Even the youngest enjoy the benefits.

One student said doing mindfulness at quiet time just calms them down.

There’s some real learning going on here, in fact, they’ve put together a chart to help them refocus their minds when their thoughts may wander throughout the day.

“One of my favorite affirmations is I can persevere … Because when I’m stuck , it helps me get through things,” said second-grader Sydney Amara.

Second-grade teacher Rene Chin said they’re using math, reading and writing, science, and social studies all day long.

“When our students are able to understand their feelings and vocalize them- able to use all these practices- they then lean into the academics all day long. They’re pushing themselves harder because they know how to get unstuck – how to work through those feelings.” Chin said.
