Documentary connects Indigenous tribes from Iowa, Hawaii and Mexico through dance

In 1883, the U.S. Department of the Interior created a Code of Indian Offenses — it made Native dancing and ceremonies illegal and gave Indian Agents authority to punish anyone who violated the code. This was part of a systematic effort to erase individual tribal cultures and to force all indigenous people to assimilate. The documentary Why We Dance takes viewers into the heart of Indigenous communities around North America in Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota, Hawaii and Mexico. It's a film about heritage, connection, joy and cultural resilience.

Veteran of the War of 1812 buried in Monroe County receives headstone

A large group gathered on Wednesday, Oct. 21 to honor veteran Philander Turrel by raising a tombstone on his Monroe County grave. Turrel was a veteran of the War of 1812, serving in the First Regiment of the Ohio Militia commanded by Lt. Col. Jedediah Beard, often called Beard’s Regiment. Born in 1789, he passed away on March 24, 1874 and was buried in rural Monroe County, about five miles east of Albia.

The question was posed as preparation began on this year’s event to be held on Nov. 3 as a drive through and pickup dinner from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The memories question led to two other major questions. Why was Election Day chosen as the “primetime” to have a fundraiser for the parish and what year was the first meal held? Inquiring minds went to work to try to find the answers. There is nothing in the church records or history that gives the date of the first Election Day Dinner. Descendants of the first organizers and workers recalled what they were told or remembered.
