WARREN (WWJ) — A former Warren City Council member and current candidate for Macomb County Sheriff has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon following a traffic stop in Warren.

Edward Kabacinski was arraigned Thursday on the felony charge after surrendering to police while wearing a full military uniform, according to the Warren Police Department. Kabacinski spent four years as a city councilman and is currently running for sheriff.

Shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, Warren police officers noticed a van with a cracked windshield and a license plate that had expired in October 2019 driving near Hoover and Common Road, according to a press release from the department.

When officers stopped Kabacinski they “immediately noticed” that Kabacinski had a revolver secured in a holster on his right hip. Kabacinski informed officers that he was carrying a gun and said that he was a retired law enforcement officer, according to the release.

Along with his Michigan driver’s license, Kabacinski also showed officers a silver badge that said “United States Army,” “Military Retired Police” in banners and an expired US Army Reserve Military Identification card.

Kabacinski told officers that he did not have a valid Michigan concealed pistol license (CPL) and that because of his retired military status he didn’t need one.

Officers seized the revolver from Kabacinski for officer safety and he was detained in a patrol vehicle for further investigation, according to the release.

The revolver was loaded and came back as registered to Kabacinski. He also had additional ammunition for the revolver, handcuffs and handcuff keys on his person, police said.

It was determined that further investigation was required to verify if Kabacinski was illegally carrying a concealed handgun. The revolver was seized as evidence and Kabacinski’s vehicle was impounded. He was issued a civil infraction for expired plates and cracked windshield and he was released at the scene.

A Warren PD detective began investigating the incident on Monday and the case was presented to the prosecutor’s office the same day.

On Thursday Kabacinski surrendered to police wearing “a full military uniform,” according to the department. He was given a $5,000 bond at his arraignment and his next court appearance has been scheduled for May 14.

An additional condition of Kabacinski’s bond is that he cannot possess any firearms.

The department said further investigation is being conducted into Kabacinski’s military service claims and status.

This is not the first time Kabacinski has had a run in with the law, as he tackled and handcuffed a counter protester at a Trump rally in 2020 and the following year he was arrested for selling Trump merchandise without a license . In both cases, he was sentenced to probation.
