Ripon volleyball suffers heartbreaking collapse in CIF SJS final
All Ripon could do was look across the net, embrace one another and wonder what could have been. Two sets in, another even-year championship appeared within reach. Three sets later, the Indians were holding the runner-up plaque yet again. No. 1 Ripon surrendered a two-set lead against No. 2 Nevada Union on Saturday at Cosumnes River College, falling 22-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-12 in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship. "It's tough, but I'm proud of them," Ripon coach Gregory Soliz said. "Not a lot of teams can get to this point, and they did. At the same time, they're not happy about it. I told them, let it hurt. Embrace the hurt. Then get ready for state." It was their fifth straight trip to the section championship match, having won titles in 2022 and 2024. Yet the past two had ended the same way , with five-set defeats. "The girls were ready to play," Soliz said. "We played well, but this game's about momentum. Summerville Defeated By Linden
Summerville was defeated by Linden 40-35 Friday night in Tuolumne. With a buzz throughout the stadium, Summerville hosted Linden in a playoff-like season finale. Summerville kicked off to start their Senior Night, and despite a strong opening Lions drive, showing off the running abilities of Issac Ruvalcaba and the receiving abilities of Antoine Moore, Linden stalled out on a 4th & 1 near the red zone, turning the ball over to the Bears. Summerville’s opening drive would end after a trick play gone awry was intercepted by the Lions. However, that drive would show Summerville’s game plan: hard-nosed runs between the tackles and plays designed to cause chaos for the Lions’ defense. The ensuing Linden drive brought us into the second quarter and broke the ice, scoring a touchdown with about 7 minutes left before halftime. The Bears would then waste most of the remaining time left in the second quarter, answering with the first of three Evan Roberson touchdowns with 2:14 left to play before halftime to tie the game at 7 all.
