11 children taken to hospital after overheating at Lynn athletic event

The kids complained of dizziness at an outdoor track and field event Friday morning.

Eleven children were taken to local hospitals after showing signs of overheating and dehydration at a Lynn track event Friday, according to local media.

Fire crews were called to Manning Field Friday morning after the fifth-grade students complained of dizziness, according to a 7 News report.

The students were from area schools and had gathered at the outdoor field for an annual track and field event as temperatures approached 80 degrees. According to the Mayo Clinic, heat illness is caused by exposure to high temperatures, particularly when high humidity and strenuous physical activity are involved.

Students were taken to Salem and Beverly hospitals, and a person on a stretcher was taken into an ambulance at the scene, 7 News reported.

The track and field event was canceled, and the remaining students returned to their respective schools. There was no word on the condition of the transported students, according to the news station.

By 3 p.m., temperatures in the Lynn area had reached 83 degrees, with a real feel of nearly 90. High temps are expected to last through the weekend.
