Down to Business: Plan to shop at Saturday’s Spring Ferrell Supply Market

The biannual Spring Ferrell Supply Market is making its way back to Lucama Saturday for a day filled with shopping and fellowship.
Genny Bailey hosts the event with her sisters, Jill Ferrell Robertson and Gretchen Jenkins, at their grandparents’ home at 5337 Scott Church Road in Lucama.
“People come from all over North Carolina, so it’s really exciting,” Bailey said. “It’ll be good. It’s kind of grown organically. The community’s really enjoyed it. We’ve enjoyed hosting it. It’s just a gathering place for everyone.”
This spring market is the family’s seventh and will feature more than 50 small businesses from across North Carolina and Virginia. Bailey said vendors will offer boutique clothing, home decor, artist candles, dog bandanas, handmade leather bags, children’s clothing, soaps, jewelery, artisan chocolates, locally raised meat, vintage finds, handmade woods crafts and more.
Entry is $5 for adults. Children 17 and under get in free. Everyone who comes through gets a wristband on entry that is good for the entire day. Bailey said Item9 Pizza, Taste of Texas and 2nd Street Coffee will have food trucks set up outside the event. She said the best new addition is the recently constructed concrete outdoor pavilion, perfect for sitting in the shade to listen to music and eat.
“We’ve made a lot of connections with people that we never would’ve made if we hadn’t started this,” Bailey said. “It’s really fun. There’s a vendor from Wake Forest that grew up in a small little community in Ohio. It’s not near here, but she loves the market because it reminds her of home and the community she grew up in. It’s off the beaten path, so it’s nice to kind of disconnect and see the countryside.”
Bailey said hosting the spring market requires all hands on deck.
“It takes a village for sure,” Bailey said. “We have a lot of support from our family and family friends. This is our seventh market we’re hosting this spring. We’ve kind of got into a rhythm as far as knowing what everyone’s job is. With the growth, we have to have more hands on deck. Our aunt and uncle come and help, family friends that we grew up with come, my friends and roommates from college — everyone comes and works for the whole day with us. Everyone has a role.”
Bailey said she and her sisters are raising the next generation to take over the market one day.
“I have three children; my sister has three children,” Bailey said. “Our friends’ kids love it just as much as we do. It’s fun to see the kids get involved and work. That’s where our market’s different. It’s a bit more of a family feel. The kids enjoy checking on the vendors and getting them what they need.”
Ferrell Supply Market is open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
