LUBBOCK, Texas — If you’ve been anywhere in Texas, you’ve probably run into some cities that are as difficult to pronounce as putting socks on a rooster. We asked our viewers about the most challenging words in the South Plains, and some of the responses were downright absurd.
Lubbock
Starting with a fan-favorite, we have Lubbock. Still undecided, the town often gets two pronunciations: “Luh-BICK or Luh-BUCK.” If you ask Josh Abbott Band , its the former. If you ask Google, it’s the latter. Officially, Lubbock’s phonetic spelling is “ˈləbək”.
City poll asking citizens how they pronounce ‘Lubbock’ Lamesa
According to one viewer, they’ve heard the name Lamesa pronounced as “La Mesa” meaning “the table” in Spanish. However, most other viewers argued it should be pronounced “luh-mee-suh,” phonetically spelled “ləˈmiːsə.”
Idalou
A viewer commented they’d heard Idalou pronounced as Mandalou. The most common pronunciation though, is “EYE-da-loo.”
Sudan
One viewer said a common mispronunciation of Sudan was “Sedan,” like the vehicle. The correct pronunciation is “SOO-dan,” according to most viewers.
Llano
Another word of Spanish origin, Llano inspired the name of Llano Estacado Wineries in Lubbock and Slaton. Although the double ‘L’ typically makes the ‘y’ sound in Spanish, Google says the word is pronounced like “LAH-no” phonetically spelled “länō.”
You’re saying it wrong: Commonly mispronounced Texas cities Slaton
Viewers say this town is commonly mispronounced as Slat-tin. But it is “SLAY-ton,” phonetically spelled “ˈsleɪtən.”
