Nothing small about the play of Zeeland East's undersized middle hitter, who heads to Calvin

ZEELAND - Bri Cole is easy to overlook. She isn't the best player on her team, nor is she the tallest hitter on her team. In fact her own setter is taller than her. But the 5-foot, 7-inch Zeeland East middle hitter quickly makes opponents pay for overlooking her. "A challenge for me is being underestimated just by my height. But after I stuff a 6-2 girl, I've caught people's attention," Cole said. "I love the position with its different hitting spots and lateral movements. Although I can end up running all over the court and ending up in some awkward spots, I wouldn't change it for the world." Cole has had some huge blocks on some of the state's best hitters this season, showcasing her leaping ability to go along with her net skills. Those moments caught the eyes of colleges and Cole decided to stay close to home and join perennial NCAA Division III powerhouse Calvin University in Grand Rapids. High school football game delayed by eligibility arguments to be played Tuesday

Michigan's final high school football district semifinal will be played Tuesday, Nov. 3. Grand Rapids Catholic Central (7-2) will host Comstock Park (4-5) in the 128th district semifinal of the 2026 postseason at CC's field on Tuesday, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association's website. The school confirmed to the Free Press it will host the game Tuesday night. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, along with the majority of other first-round playoff matchups in Michigan , but it was removed from the schedule on Thursday. The MHSAA announced it was withdrawing Grand Rapids Catholic Central , which entered the postseason as the top-seeded team in Division 5 with a 7-2 record, for the use of an ineligible player during the regular season. Using an ineligible player means a team must forfeit the games in which they participated, which took five wins off GRCC's resume and left the Cougars without the requisite playoff points to make the final 32. In response to the MHSAA's decision, the school released a statement saying the student in question transferred to the school in January 2026. Taking some beatings early this fall is finally paying dividends. Grandville (5-5) barely snuck into the playoffs after playing the second-hardest strength of schedule among Michigan’s 493 teams. That included facing state powers Muskegon, Detroit Cass Tech, East Kentwood and Hudsonville in consecutive games to open the season. Saugatuck assistant coach suspended for MHSAA violation; all-state guard transfers

The Saugatuck basketball team will be without its best player this season and without an assistant coach for a few games. It is part of a tough start for the Saugatuck program before the season has even begun. All-state guard Mylah Simpson has transferred to South Haven, which will be a huge hole to fill in the lineup. In addition and unrelated, Saugatuck will be without an assistant coach for the first five games of the girls basketball season based on an MHSAA violation. The school submitted evidence and letters of support for the coach indicating that the communication made was a result of normal community interaction due to the coach being a former coach at the previous school, Fennville High School, and still lives in that community.
