A day before 11 Trinity High School seniors graduated, they won their first Kentucky Scholastic Lacrosse League state championship together.
"This is a historic win,” Trinity coach Pete Schroeder said Saturday after winning his third KSLL title. “It’s the 20th anniversary of our first title in 2004. Those guys are dads, doctors, whatever now. We got our 300th win at some point. Lots of history made today, super proud of our program. We can’t wait to try to be the first KHSAA champions next year.”
The Shamrocks ' 12-2 win over South Oldham in the KSLL final at Trinity marked the program's seventh state title and first since 2017. Juniors Noah Hollister and Logan Bryant, and title-game MVP Huck Campbell each recorded hat tricks. Trinity ended the KSLL era as the first and last title winner after also winning in 2013.
"This is electric," Campbell, a senior, said with a grin. "I won one playing football in December, so it's good to be back in my main sport, winning one with the boys."
Next season, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association will begin sponsoring the lacrosse state championships.
Schroeder said he's excited for a new challenge as a sanctioned sport, and he said the Rocks should be among the top teams. South Oldham coach Joe Richie said the change will be good for state lacrosse long term and the Dragons will be contenders.
“It’s a lot of work for the people before me,” said KSLL Commissioner Joe Scheper, who is Eastern's athletics director. “A lot of people in the lacrosse community, longtime coaches, they put this league together so kids had a chance to play a postseason for a championship for many years. For it be recognized, it’s awesome. There’s a couple associations in the state. Now we’ll be able to play for (a) true state champion every year, which is awesome.”
Trinity raced to a 3-0 lead before Dragons sophomore Blake Dickamore scored his first goal. The Rocks scored eight unanswered goals before Dickamore added another for South Oldham.
"It's huge being the lone public school that's doing this," Richie said about the Dragons' back-to-back championship game appearances. "You can only knock on the door so long before you got to kick the damn thing in."
