The John Glenn High School and middle school archery teams recently competed at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Eastern Nationals Archery Tournament and the NASP Eastern Nationals International Bowhunting Organization 3D Challenge in Louisville, Kentucky.

Coaches, students and their parents made their way south for the annual three-day tournament held at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Schools from all across the country lined up to shoot at their intended targets. The tournament annually draws huge crowds and has up to 880 archers per hour shooting at the same time.

Vendors lined the expo center, selling everything from T-shirts and hoodies to new bows and 3D targets. Students could get their cases airbrushed or purchase decals with saying like "I don't wear bows... I shoot them" and "In my archery era."

Numerous national companies provided sponsorships for the tournament, including Easton and Cabelas. Every student who participates in the NASP program uses the same type of Genesis compound bow and the same Easton arrows. While bows and arrows can be customized for color and drawback weight, having every student use the same equipment contributes to an even playing field.

Students had the opportunity to compete in either the Bullseye portion of the tournament and/or the 3D portion of the tournament. The John Glenn teams competed in both areas. During the Bullseye portion, archers shoot five arrows three times from both the 10-meter and the 15-meter mark. The 3D portion has archers rotate between six animal targets, shooting five arrows at each target, with a perfect score being 300. Roughly 14,494 students competed in the Bullseye tournament and 6,445 in the 3D tournament during the three-day event.

More than 252 teams from around the country competed in the high school Bullseye portion of the tournament. The John Glenn High School team finished 113th and had three members qualify to shoot at the NASP National Championship to be held June 6 to 8 in Daytona Beach, Florida. The three qualifiers were Brayden Sparks who shot 289 out of a possible 300, Laney Mathews who shot a 283 and Noreen Ashraf who also shot a 283.

The high school walked away with a total Bullseye score of 3,258 and logged 139 10-point scoring arrows. In 3D, the team logged 1,498 points with 46 10-point arrows.

The middle school students fought hard and came out 126th out of 267 teams for Bullseye and 27th out of 147 teams for the 3D portion. Megan Lashley shot a 284 out of 300 in bullseye and Eric Wagner shot a 281. Both scores qualifying them to shoot in Florida. The middle school team had a combined score of 3133 for bullseye, with 99 10-point arrows being scored, and a score of 1624 for 3D with 78 10-point arrows.

On the 3D middle school team, Titus Morrow took the lead with a score of 285, while Lashley shot 283, also qualifying them for the championship 3D shoot.

Students have been competing at MVAL shoots throughout the season, and participating in area fun shoots in addition. The archery season will kick off once again near the end of the year for middle and high school students. Families interested in participating can reach out to the East Muskingum school their child attends for more information. To learn about the NASP tournament visit https://nasptournaments.org.
