4/20, a holiday about all things cannabis and marijuana, is on Saturday. While weed isn't legal for medicinal or recreational purposes in Kentucky in 2024, it's likely some still partake in the celebration, traveling to nearby dispensaries and attending local events to light up.

Thunder Over Louisville and the 150th Kentucky Derby are near — not to mention other large events like Bourbon & Beyond and Louder Than Life. Marijuana is the most used drug by concertgoers, according to a recent study from Innerbody. Here's what we know.

Cannabis ranks top drug for concerts, music festivals ahead of 4/20

For the third consecutive year, marijuana ranked as the most used drug at concerts and music festivals, according to the website's 2024 Drug Safety at Music Festival study. Of 900 participants planning to engage in drug use at a music festival this year, 65.3% planned to use marijuana.

This is due, in part, to widespread cannabis legislation across the U.S. According to Real Estate Witch, 37 states have already legalized weed for medicinal use, with 24 states and the District of Columbia allowing for recreational use as well.

Drugs at music festivals

The drugs most frequently used at concerts and music festivals are:

  • Marijuana: 65.3%
  • Cocaine: 46.5%
  • Psychedelics (LSD, Shrooms, etc.): 26.1%
  • MDMA/ Ecstasy: 19.4%
  • Ketamine: 19.3%
  • Amphetamines (Adderall, etc.): 13.7%
  • Opioids (Heroin, Oxycodone, etc.): 12.1%

Rock, hip-hop, and EDM concerts are most likely to have audience members under the influence of drugs, most prominently in Millennials and Gen Z.

Kentucky marijuana laws

In Kentucky, possession of marijuana under 8 ounces is a punishable misdemeanor of up to 45 days in jail and a $250 fine. Second time offenders and those with larger amounts of marijuana are felony offenses, and would result in greater jail time and fines, according to NORML.
