Veteran rockers Redd Kross have announced a self-titled double album, out June 28th, and a Summer 2024 North American tour.
The trek kicks off July 2nd in San Diego and runs through August 13th in Los Angeles. The route will hit major cities such as Seattle, Chicago, Brooklyn, Toronto, and Dallas along the way. In addition, Redd Kross are also slated to play the Punk Rock Bowling festival on May 24th in Las Vegas.
A Live Nation ticket pre-sale for select dates begins Wednesday (May 1st) at 10 a.m. local time using the code SOUNDCHECK . General ticket sales start Friday (May 3rd) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Fans can also look for deals or get tickets to sold-out dates via StubHub , where your purchase is 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s Fan Protect program.
Along with the announcements, Redd Kross dropped the lead single and album opener “Candy Coloured Catastrophe” — a chunky power-pop jammer with a garage-psych tinge. The signature sardonic humor of the brothers Jeff and Steven McDonald — the masterminds behind the long-running band — is also present in the lyrical content.
“Our message is, ‘What is art?’” stated Jeff in a press release. “Who gets to decide? And maybe these rock-stars who suddenly decide they’re fine artists and Hollywood actors who decide they’re punk-rock singers should, you know, stay in their lane.”
The McDonalds tapped former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer to produce and play drums on the double LP. Originally, Steven had hoped to record with his Melvins bandmate Dale Crover; however, with the latter recovering from spinal surgery , Steven reached out to his friend Klinghoffer, whose studio and stable of guitars and gear helped forge the new record.
“Josh is 13 years younger than me, and he’s like the younger brother I never had,” said Steven. “He’s a super-talented musician who’s really good at being supportive, and he’s really in-tune with a band’s internal dynamics. And he had us on our best behavior, not wanting to disappoint Josh! His studio is like the most incredible vintage guitar shop — he would take great delight in pulling out some rare instrument or effects box to inspire us.”
Regarding the decision to lay down an 18-song double album, Jeff added: “I’m usually the one who says our albums have to be ‘ten songs, no more.’ But we had all these great songs, and we wanted to let them all breathe. So the album had to be 18 songs.”
The eponymous release comes amdist a media whirlwind of sorts for Redd Kross, who are celebrating their 45th anniversary as a band. There’s also a memoir, Now You’re One Of Us , due in October, and a rockumentary, Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story (directed by Andrew Reich), is currently making the rounds at film festivals.
