(JTA) — As Duke University’s president introduced the commencement speaker, two cries rang out: first, loud boos, and then, a joyous chant of “Jerry! Jerry!”. Dozens of graduates, some carrying Palestinian flags, walked out of the ceremony to protest Jerry Seinfeld, who has been outspoken in his support for Israel since Oct. 7, the beginning of the war that has ignited anti-Israel protests on college campuses across the United States. With Seinfeld at his side, Duke President Vincent Price paused his introduction for nearly a minute for the commotion to settle down.

“I didn’t really experience antisemitism until I got here,” said one Jewish student. GAINESVILLE, Fla. – As pro-Palestinian protests rocked elite campuses across the country this school year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis invited Jewish students with “a well-founded fear of antisemitic persecution” to seek refuge in his state’s public colleges. Ben Sasse, president of the University of Florida — which has more Jewish students than any public university in the nation — wrote an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal last week lambasting the way other schools had allowed “entitled activists” to take over their campuses. At UF, as the school is known, he promised that “the adults are still in charge.”

The University of Florida calls itself a haven for Jews. For some students, it doesn’t always feel that way.

(JTA) – The student encampment at Cornell University is disbanding, in a rare instance of a campus pro-Palestinian protest dissolving on its own. Encampments at a series of other schools have ended only after schools made agreements with protesters or called in police. Police action has led to thousands of arrests, chaotic scenes of violence and accusations of suppressing free speech. Agreements with protesters have incurred the wrath of many in the organized Jewish community, who argue that the encampments should face consequences for encouraging antisemitic behavior.
