LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (KRQE) – Los Alamos Police say hypodermic needles were found at North Mesa baseball fields. Police are asking community members to be cautious.

“We ask that parents, coaches, and the public be vigilant and inspect and sweep sporting facilities, as well as other public areas like parks, prior to practice and games,” Deputy Police Chief Oliver Morris said in a press release. “Please call our non-emergency Consolidated Dispatch Center at (505) 662-8281 for proper and safe disposal of drug paraphernalia or sharps.”

The Los Alamos Little League reported the needles to the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD). The department disposed of the sharps, then kept an eye on the fields via a police trailer.

Police say on Tuesday, they discovered an unoccupied homeless encampment and more drug paraphernalia. Now, police say they are working with Los Alamos Public Schools to try to boost safety in the area. Police also advise parents to encourage their children to stay on sidewalks and never pick up needles or other trash.
