New rates OK'd. Myrtle Beach area residents could pay nearly 10% more for electricity

Many Horry County residents will see more expensive utility bills as Santee Cooper plans to increase rates next year. The Santee Cooper governing board voted Friday to increase rates for residential, commercial, industrial and lighting customers two years in a row. Residential customers are expected to see an average spending increase of 4.7% in the initial 2027 hike, followed by a 4.6% increase in the 2028 hike, coming to a total of roughly 9.3% in two years. “The residential – that 4.7% – translates to about $6.60 a month for a typical residential customer, or about 20 cents a day, and then similar impact in 2028 for those customers, as well,” Santee Cooper senior director of financial planning Greg McCormack told the board. Commercial customers are predicted to pay 2.9% more on average in both 2027 and 2028, totalling about 5.8%. Because customer impacts are based on usage, the actual increase will vary by customer. The new rates go into effect on Feb. 1, 2027, so billing could include January usage. The next increase will follow on Feb. 1, 2028. Before voting to increase rates, Santee Cooper held public input meetings and received hundreds of written comments from customers. Management
