Sonora Pass Closure Gate Moving Higher Up
Sonora, CA — Caltrans reports that progress is being made plowing snow off Highway 108 Sonora Pass. Pass-clearing operations commenced last week and crews have been working 10 hours per day, seven days a week. The Long Barn maintenance crew has been busy removing downed trees and other debris.
Farmers Market In Standard Has New Operator
Standard, CA — The Tuolumne County Resource Conservation District will be opening a new Standard Farmer’s Market starting next month and running into October. The group made the decision because the former Peaceful Valley Farmers Market was not planning to operate this year. The new market will be set up in the same parking lot on Peaceful Valley Road in East Sonora. It will be open every Friday from 4-8 pm from May 3 through October 18.

PG&E Will Be Inspecting Equipment by Helicopter
Sonora, CA — Pacific Gas & Electric will have helicopters flying low in the region on Friday, April 19, inspecting electric towers and poles. PG&E spokesperson Jeff Smith reports, “You can expect to see and hear helicopters flying close to the power lines. They may hover in the same location for brief periods of time. While patrols are underway, you may also see PG&E and/or contractor trucks in the area.”
Update: Structure Fire In Sonora
Update at 5:36 p.m.: Fire crews have contained an afternoon blaze on Rough and Ready Trail off Jamestown Road. CAL Fire dispatch reports that the garage was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the property located in the 19900 block of Rough and Ready Trail near Panorama Place. They added that the fire did not spread to nearby vegetation. Reportedly, one resident and a dog were able to flee the home before firefighters arrived. CAL Fire noted that the house was detached from the garage and suffered no damage.

1 dead, 1 injured in Tuolumne County shooting
LONG BARN, Calif. — The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a person was shot dead and another person was wounded by gunfire near Long Barn. Deputies responded to reports of a shooting around 10:10 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Long Barn Road near Circle Drive. While arriving on scene, they heard additional gunshots and a second victim was reported injured.
Bullfrogs suffer 5-Stroke defeat to Bears in tight league matchup
With the end of the regular season right around the corner, the race to become Mother Lode League champions just got a lot tighter. The Bret Harte High School golf team had its eight-match winning streak come to an end. Bret Harte lost to the Summerville Bears 219-224 on Thursday afternoon at Teleli Golf Club in Sonora. The loss, Bret Harte’s second of the year, drops the Bullfrogs into a tie for first place in the Mother Lode League standings with Calaveras. Although Calaveras has a better overall record (12-1), both teams have the same number of points (32), with Bret Harte winning the Mother Lode League midseason tournament at the end of March.

LAST EARTH: Art Experience is envisioned as a can’t miss free event for the community to delve into a realm where art and environmental consciousness converge. The event will showcase a mix of analog and digital projection and video art, recycled sculpture, and interactive elements. The art will be complemented by live music to create what organizers describe as “face-melting” and “a unique time and space for ecological contemplation, reflection, and renewal and will usher the audience through a cycle that spans an entire weekend of performances by California artists.”

Sonora, CA – The Sonora Union High School District is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on its governing board, and the deadline is fast approaching. Today’s announcement follows the resignation of Trustee Nancy Scott, who vacated the seat on March 30, 2024, as she moved out of Trustee Area 1. First elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022, Trustee Scott served two years as Board President. Her term was to last until 2026.
