(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A western suburb is giving homeowners an excuse to be a bit lax this spring.

For the second straight year, Lombard is encouraging residents to participate in its “No Mow ‘til Mother’s Day.” The green initiative helps support the local ecology, the habitats of pollinators and area wildlife.

Under a revision to the local code, property owners can let their grass grow past 8 inches, but only until the Saturday after Mother’s Day.

Residents do not need to enroll in the program, but they can display a sign provided by the village that explains the initiative.

Village officials will begin enforcing the lawn ordinance on May 20.
