A man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon by Logan City police in an officer-involved shooting.

Logan City police detectives and Cache County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting Wednesday at Denzil Stewart Nature Park around 4:30 p.m.

In an updated press release Thursday, Logan police identified the deceased man as Adam Scott Phillips, 33, from Layton, Utah.

The press release said Phillips was the subject of an Internet Crimes Against Children investigation conducted by the department.

An officer posing as an underage female had been communicating with Phillips and arranged to meet at the park where the incident took place.

According to Logan police, detectives contacted Phillips during the investigation and attempted to arrest him.

Police say he resisted and produced a gun, that he then fired at the officers at close range. An officer returned fire and struck the suspect.

Officers immediately started life-saving efforts at the park, but the man died from his injuries. Two officers suffered non life-threatening injuries in the incident, according to police.

Police shut down the area of 100 South east of 560 East while officers investigated.

The officer who shot the man was placed on administrative leave pending an internal review.

The Northern Utah Critical Incident Protocol team will investigate the shooting. The Cache County Attorney’s office will publish an analysis of the incident.
