Bebe Neuwirth is back on Broadway in the latest incarnation of the groundbreaking musical "Cabaret."

Neuwirth, a two-time Tony winner, is playing Fraulein Schneider, the matron of a boarding house.

"Cabaret" is set in Berlin in 1929, at the twilight of the Jazz Age and rise to power of the Nazis.

Neuwirth sat down with us at the famed Joe Allen Restaurant in Midtown for a candid conversation about the revival of "Cabaret" and how the show is still relevant decades after it was first produced for the stage.

She also offered some surprising details about her work in television and film.

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

This Strawberry Dessert Was Made to Steal the Whole Table

Some desserts sit politely in the corner, but a Southern strawberry punch bowl cake is designed to command the center of the table. Layers of tender cake, juicy strawberries, and cool creamy filling build against the sides of a clear bowl, showing off every color and texture before anyone takes the first serving. The berries bring freshness, the cream makes each spoonful soft and luxurious, and the cake absorbs enough of the surrounding flavor to become even better as it chills. Instead of precise slices, this dessert offers generous scoops where the layers mingle together, making every bowlful slightly different. It feels festive without becoming formal and nostalgic without looking dated. Once the serving spoon reaches the bottom and lifts all those layers at once, people understand why punch bowl cakes have remained such beloved gathering desserts.

Remember the White Candy That Seemed to Appear in Every Grandma’s Christmas Tin?

Divinity is one of those old-fashioned candies that can instantly bring back a kitchen you haven’t stood in for years. Light, fluffy, and almost cloud-like, it’s nothing like dense fudge or chewy caramel. The outside sets with a delicate finish while the center stays soft and airy, with that unmistakable melt-away sweetness that made it a holiday candy-table favorite. It looks deceptively simple, but anyone who grew up watching a grandmother, aunt, or church-supper expert make a batch probably remembers there was a little technique involved. When it turns out right, those snowy spoonfuls look beautiful piled onto a platter—and somehow taste even better after you’ve spent years wondering why people stopped making them.

Mama’s Goulash Tastes Like the Dinner Everyone Remembers

Mama’s Goulash combines elbow macaroni, seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, and cheese into a saucy one-pan dinner that feels immediately familiar. The macaroni cooks until tender and catches the tomato-rich sauce inside every curve, while the beef makes the meal hearty enough to satisfy a crowded table. Onion and pepper soften into the background, contributing sweetness and savory flavor without distracting from the combination people expect. Cheese melts through the pasta and gives the sauce a comforting richness that plain beef and tomatoes cannot provide. This is American family-style goulash rather than a formal European stew, and its appeal comes from affordability, generosity, and the ability to turn basic pantry ingredients into a pot that smells like somebody’s childhood kitchen.

This Is the Cherry Dessert I’d Make When Company Is Coming in 20 Minutes

Some desserts need hours of careful baking, cooling, and decorating. This cherry angel food cake lush is what you make when the clock says you don’t have that kind of time. Soft, airy pieces of angel food cake meet cool, creamy layers and juicy cherries for a dessert that tastes far more put-together than its 20-minute prep suggests. The cake soaks up just enough of that sweet cherry goodness while still keeping its light, fluffy texture, and the creamy filling gives every spoonful that old-fashioned potluck-dessert richness. It’s bright, soft, fruity, and wonderfully messy in the way the best chilled desserts tend to be. Put it in a pretty serving dish and nobody needs to know how little time you actually spent in the kitchen.

Grandma Didn’t Need Fancy Ingredients to Make This Cake

Granny’s Thrifty Made Cake belongs to the dependable category of desserts created to taste good without requiring expensive ingredients, complicated fillings, or professional decorating equipment. The cake is simple, buttery, sturdy, and topped with homemade buttercream that gives every slice the familiar sweetness people expect from an old-fashioned celebration cake. Its appeal is not built around a trendy flavor or an elaborate surprise hidden inside. Instead, it relies on a tender crumb, recognizable ingredients, and the sort of straightforward preparation that allowed generations of home bakers to produce something special from an ordinary pantry. That kind of reliability is precisely why recipes like this survive long after more elaborate desserts have been forgotten.

This Isn’t the Meatloaf You Remember

Classic beef meatloaf may own the nostalgic reputation, but this Garlic Parmesan Chicken Meatloaf shows how much personality a lighter version can have. Ground chicken is seasoned with garlic, herbs, Parmesan, and mozzarella, then finished with a buttery Parmesan breadcrumb topping that turns crisp and golden in the oven. The cheese helps keep the interior flavorful and tender, addressing the dryness people sometimes expect from chicken-based dishes, while the crumb topping creates an appealing contrast with the soft loaf beneath it. Instead of relying on the familiar sweet tomato glaze, this version leans into the savory character of garlic bread and Italian comfort food. It still slices like the family dinner everyone recognizes, but the first bite makes it clear that this loaf is going in a completely different direction.

7 Christmas Candies Mothers Made at the Kitchen Table

I use AI to help draft these articles. Every recipe and every fact in them is checked before publishing. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas from the 1950s into the 1980s, the kitchen in plenty of American homes shifted into a different gear. Cookies went first, then candy, and candy was a different kind of work. It called for a thermometer, the heaviest pot you owned, a marble slab or a sheet of buttered foil, and real attention. Women swapped these recipes on index cards at the church bazaar or through the small spiral-bound cookbooks their church and club auxiliaries printed and sold. When the candy was done it went into a tin on wax paper, stacked in layers by type, and passed along to neighbors or kept on the counter through the holiday.

Remember Sock-It-to-Me Cake? The Cake-Mix Shortcut Is Probably Why It Never Disappeared

Some cakes stick around because they’re beautiful. Sock-It-to-Me Cake stuck around because it’s the kind of thing somebody’s aunt, neighbor, or church friend could bring to a gathering and reliably take home an empty plate. This version starts with cake mix, but the real appeal is what happens after that shortcut: a soft, buttery cake with a sweet, warmly spiced ribbon tucked through the middle. Every slice has that old-school Bundt-cake look, with a golden exterior and a moist center that practically begs for a cup of coffee. It tastes nostalgic without requiring an afternoon of measuring flour and fussing over layers. If you remember this cake showing up at family reunions, potlucks, or Sunday dinners, one bite may explain why people kept passing the recipe around.

This Silky Crab Soup Feels Like Dinner at a Waterfront Restaurant

Crab Bisque has the luxurious reputation of a soup reserved for expensive seafood restaurants, yet its appeal comes from a straightforward combination of well-chosen ingredients. Butter, onion, garlic, stock, tomato paste, cream, seasoning, and tender lump crab meat come together in a silky base that tastes rich without burying the seafood. The aromatics establish a savory foundation, tomato paste contributes color and subtle depth, and cream smooths the entire mixture into the texture expected from a proper bisque. Crab remains the star, adding delicate sweetness and making every spoonful feel more special than an ordinary weeknight soup. Served in a simple bowl, it still carries the elegance of something that should arrive with white linens and a view of the water.

This Strawberry Dessert Never Goes Near the Oven

Strawberry Delight earns its name by turning a few familiar ingredients into a creamy dessert that looks far more involved than it really is. A ready-made graham cracker crust supports a light cream cheese filling, while a glossy layer of fresh strawberries adds bright color and juicy fruit flavor. The combination gives you buttery crumbs, smooth filling, and fresh berries in every forkful without asking you to bake cake layers or manage a complicated cheesecake. Because the dessert is chilled, it tastes especially refreshing when the weather is warm and a heavy baked dessert feels unnecessary. The strawberries remain the visual star, but the tang from the cream cheese keeps their sweetness balanced and makes the finished dessert taste richer than an ordinary fruit pie.
