Twenty-five miles north of Hollywood you can find another mecca of filmmaking. Since the early days of movie production, Newhall, in the Santa Clarita Valley, has been a preferred backdrop for Westerns starring the likes of William S. Hart, John Wayne and Steve McQueen. The city honors these legends with local ties along its Walk of Western Stars.

'It was started by our local Chamber of Commerce back in 1981,' said the City of Santa Clarita's Arts & Events Manager Phil Lantis. 'It's a wonderful opportunity to recognize our past.'

New honorees are added yearly, installed by the same company who installs Hollywood's stars along the Walk of Fame.

These Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Vanish Before the Party Starts

Ritz Party Sandwiches transform familiar buttery crackers into warm, savory appetizers that are exactly the right size for grabbing from a crowded table. Cheese and flavorful sandwich fillings sit between pairs of crackers, creating miniature bites with a crisp exterior and rich center. As they bake, the cheese melts, the filling warms, and the crackers become even more aromatic without losing the delicate texture that makes Ritz crackers so recognizable. Each small sandwich delivers salt, butter, cheese, and savory flavor in one or two bites, which explains why people rarely stop after taking only one. The recipe does not require elaborate pastry, specialty bread, or hours of preparation, yet the completed tray looks more thoughtful than simply opening a box of crackers. It is party food built around convenience without tasting like the cook took an obvious shortcut.

This Strawberry Dessert Was Made to Steal the Whole Table

Some desserts sit politely in the corner, but a Southern strawberry punch bowl cake is designed to command the center of the table. Layers of tender cake, juicy strawberries, and cool creamy filling build against the sides of a clear bowl, showing off every color and texture before anyone takes the first serving. The berries bring freshness, the cream makes each spoonful soft and luxurious, and the cake absorbs enough of the surrounding flavor to become even better as it chills. Instead of precise slices, this dessert offers generous scoops where the layers mingle together, making every bowlful slightly different. It feels festive without becoming formal and nostalgic without looking dated. Once the serving spoon reaches the bottom and lifts all those layers at once, people understand why punch bowl cakes have remained such beloved gathering desserts.

Mama’s Goulash Tastes Like the Dinner Everyone Remembers

Mama’s Goulash combines elbow macaroni, seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, onions, bell pepper, and cheese into a saucy one-pan dinner that feels immediately familiar. The macaroni cooks until tender and catches the tomato-rich sauce inside every curve, while the beef makes the meal hearty enough to satisfy a crowded table. Onion and pepper soften into the background, contributing sweetness and savory flavor without distracting from the combination people expect. Cheese melts through the pasta and gives the sauce a comforting richness that plain beef and tomatoes cannot provide. This is American family-style goulash rather than a formal European stew, and its appeal comes from affordability, generosity, and the ability to turn basic pantry ingredients into a pot that smells like somebody’s childhood kitchen.

That Humble Head of Cabbage Can Become a Big Pot of Comfort in 30 Minutes

A head of cabbage doesn’t look particularly exciting sitting in the produce drawer, but give it a soup pot, a handful of vegetables, and some savory broth, and it becomes something wonderfully comforting. This hearty cabbage soup is packed with tender vegetables and warm, satisfying flavor, making it a practical choice when you want something nourishing without a complicated ingredient list. As the cabbage softens, it takes on the flavors of the broth and seasonings, while the other vegetables add color, texture, and natural sweetness. The result is a steaming bowl that feels light yet substantial, especially when you’re craving something homemade after several days of heavier meals. There’s nothing fancy about it, and that’s part of the appeal. Sometimes a simple vegetable soup is exactly what the kitchen—and the grocery budget—needs.

Frog Eye Salad Tastes Much Better Than Its Name Suggests

The name may cause hesitation, but frog eye salad contains nothing mysterious beyond tiny pasta, creamy pudding, fluffy topping, and colorful fruit. The “frog eyes” are pieces of acini di pepe pasta, which create the small, round texture responsible for the dish’s memorable title. Once combined with the sweet, creamy base and juicy fruit, the pasta becomes part of a chilled dessert salad that is soft, refreshing, and surprisingly satisfying. Different textures appear in every spoonful: tender pasta, smooth cream, and bursts of fruit that keep the mixture from feeling one-dimensional. It is a nostalgic recipe often associated with potlucks, holiday buffets, and family gatherings, where it sits somewhere between a side dish and dessert. That category confusion is part of its charm. People can place it wherever they want on the table; it will probably disappear either way.
