Teens beat the odds, land spots at West Point and other elite academies
By Sheryl Turner,
2 hours agoSix students from across California’s 30th Congressional District are trading high school graduation caps for military insignia this fall, after Rep. Laura Friedman announced their acceptance into some of the nation’s most competitive service academies and preparatory programs.
The Class of 2030 nominees — hailing from Los Angeles, Glendale, Sun Valley, and Burbank — will report to West Point, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the Naval and Air Force Academy Preparatory Schools, capping years of academic rigor, physical training, and community involvement with one of the most selective honors available to American teenagers.
Joseph Janghyun Baik of Los Angeles and David Juho Lee of Glendale will head to West Point, joining a legacy of military leadership that stretches back to the academy’s founding in 1802. Maxwell Ryder Martin-Beckmann of Sun Valley earned his place at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he’ll train for a career that bridges military service and the maritime industry. Esther Yunjeong Cha of Glendale is bound for the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, while Isabel Eunjung Kim of Glendale and Aurelia Fleur Thiel of Burbank will attend the Naval Academy Preparatory School — each a critical stepping stone to full academy enrollment.
Admission to a service academy ranks among the most demanding processes in American higher education. Candidates need not only outstanding grades and test scores, but also a congressional nomination. This step requires letters of recommendation, interviews, and evidence of leadership and character built over years, not months. That nomination has to come from someone like Friedman, who screens applicants from her district before forwarding names to the academies for final consideration.
“Serving our nation is a solemn commitment and act of patriotism, one that these young students are undertaking without hesitation,” Friedman said. “Their acceptances into the prestigious military academies and academy prep schools not only speak to their immense qualifications, but also reflect the support they’ve received from friends, parents, educators and loved ones throughout this process.”
Friedman nominated the six students with guidance from her Academy Nominations Review Board, a panel of veterans and local veterans’ organization leaders who help vet candidates each year. The congresswoman called the students a reflection of the district itself.
“These young Angelenos have already shown the discipline and commitment needed to serve in our military and protect our nation,” Friedman said. “They are a testament to the talent and families across CA-30. I know they’ll represent us with distinction, and I can’t wait to watch them lead.”
For the six appointees, the road ahead means new uniforms, new routines, and four (or more) years of academic and physical training designed to shape the next generation of American military officers and maritime leaders. But for now, their families and communities are celebrating a milestone: an open door at the nation’s most storied institutions.
