Atlanta barber decided to start his own business and build community, one fade at a time

2026-02-03

Before Primo Cutz ever had a name or a location, it started with work ethic. Marlon Hicks was behind a grocery store register at Publix, learning how to show up on time, talk to people, and take pride in doing things the right way. But the real spark came from closer to home. Watching his mother work and push forward planted the idea that building something of your own wasn’t just possible—it was worth chasing.

Barbering became that path. What began as a skill quickly turned into a calling, blending creativity, confidence, and connection. Marlon didn’t just want to cut hair; he wanted to offer a premium experience—something that felt intentional from the moment a client sat in the chair. That idea eventually became Primo Cutz, a name rooted in meaning. “Primo” reflects exactly what Marlon aims to deliver: top-tier service, professionalism, and care that goes beyond the haircut itself.

The shop’s energy is a big part of what sets it apart. Primo Cutz is polished but full of life, a place where people leave smiling and feeling like their best selves. From clean tapers to detailed finishes, the work speaks for itself. But it’s the atmosphere—snacks for clients, genuine conversation, and attention to detail—that turns first-time visitors into regulars. People don’t just trust Marlon with their hair; they trust him with how they show up in the world.

Running a business hasn’t been without its challenges. Staying on top of LLC requirements, avoiding distractions, and keeping focused while surrounded by other talented barbers takes discipline. Marlon credits much of his growth to learning from established shop owners at Tapers 2, Studio6, and Privado Grooming, where he absorbed not just technique, but the business side of barbering—how to operate, lead, and stay consistent.

What keeps him motivated is simple and powerful: the reaction in the mirror when a client sees their fresh cut. Barbering gives Marlon the freedom to create, to set his own hours, and to build something that reflects who he is. With his brother Trey supporting the brand as marketing assistant, Primo Cutz continues to grow with family at its core.

Established in 2020, Primo Cutz is now entering its next chapter with a dedicated shop opening soon on Chattahoochee Avenue in Atlanta. Looking ahead, Marlon’s vision stretches beyond a single chair. He wants to franchise Primo Cutz, expand its reach, and use the business as a way to give back and support the community that has supported him.

At its heart, Primo Cutz is about more than grooming. It’s about confidence, creativity, and building something lasting—one cut at a time.
