The legacy of Jerry Garcia lives on in this new venue in the heart of Chicago
Right in the mix of Chicago's vibrant West Loop, a new venue (that was first announced back in 2019) is finally opening its doors to live music lovers. Garcia's Chicago, which officially opened on March 21st, is the latest endeavor from Dayglo Presents, the live music company behind renowned venues like Brooklyn Bowl and The Capitol Theatre. This intimate concert venue and restaurant pays tasteful homage to the legendary Jerry Garcia, reflecting his eclectic artistry and cultural impact.
Garcia's Chicago is the result of a longstanding partnership between Dayglo Presents and the Jerry Garcia Family. Peter Shapiro, founder of Dayglo Presents, has a deep-rooted connection to the Grateful Dead legacy, having orchestrated the band's 50th-anniversary Fare Thee Well shows in Chicago in 2015. The collaboration with Garcia's family has been years in the making, culminating in a venue that embodies the spirit of Jerry Garcia while avoiding the tackiness often associated with "theme" bars. As Shapiro notes, "Even though it's named after Jerry Garcia, you won't see a Dancing Bear in the place."
Integral to the realization of Garcia's Chicago is Jesse Lauter, who serves as the Head of Production & Media at Dayglo Presents. A filmmaker and music producer, Lauter brings a wealth of experience to the role, overseeing all facets of video and audio production for the company's properties. His creative and technical oversight ensures that Garcia's Chicago delivers high-quality live and streamed performances, enhancing the overall experience for both artists and audiences.
Launching a new live music venue in the current climate is a bold move, but for the team at Dayglo Presents, it's a passion project. "We live and breathe live music, and we feel like we are on a mission... for Jerry's sake!" exclaims Lauter. The venue serves as a platform to support artists and musicians, fostering a sense of community among staff and patrons alike. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendees praising the food, sound quality, and overall experience. "We all feel like we're onto something special," Lauter reflects.
While music venues with dining options are not new, Garcia's Chicago aims to set a new standard by offering an elevated culinary experience alongside live performances. The venue boasts what the team believes to be the best food and beverage program at a music venue in the U.S. Chef Ivy Carthen, a Chicago native with two decades of experience in music venues, leads the kitchen, crafting a menu that reflects Garcia's favorite foods and the cultural influences of San Francisco and his Spanish heritage.
A standout item is "Jerry's Roast Beef Sandwich," inspired by Garcia's favorite sandwich, served on a San Francisco Dutch Crunch roll. Complementing the sandwich is a Strawberry-Vanilla shake, a nod to Garcia's love for both flavors. This thoughtful approach to the menu helps guests connect even deeper to the lore of the Grateful Dead guitarist through his culinary preferences.
Garcia's is committed to bringing a diverse array of talent to the city, featuring both emerging artists and established acts. The grand opening weekend showcased performances by Grahame Lesh & Friends, featuring Daniel Donato and Nicki Bluhm, setting the tone for the venue's musical direction. Subsequent shows have included the acclaimed gospel group Blind Boys of Alabama and the jazz ensemble LaMP.
Located at 1001 W. Washington Boulevard, Garcia's Chicago hopes to quickly become a cultural hub in the West Loop, attracting Jerry fans, music lovers and food and cocktail enthusiasts alike. The venue's design encourages dancing and offers clear views of the stage, creating an inviting atmosphere that aligns with Garcia's inclusive spirit. With a commitment to excellence in both music and cuisine, Garcia's Chicago stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Jerry Garcia and the vibrant community he inspired.
