By Sharon Wren,
21 hours agoA $9 million grant awarded to Alter Logistics through the Port Infrastructure Development Program will also benefit the Rock Island Port District. The total project investment is estimated at over $14 million and will significantly expand Alter’s existing Rock Island facilities.
The Maritime Administration division of the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the grant awardees on Oct. 27. The grant to Alter Logistics, totaling $9,015,143, is among 35 port projects in 19 states that will receive investments to strengthen the country’s internal river supply chains. The grant will help fund a new barge progression system, a new on site conveyance system, dock wall rehabilitation and expansion, dock redevelopment, a new dome with integrated conveyance and rail improvements.
“We extend our sincere thanks to Alter Logistics for their ongoing investment in Rock Island,” said Economic Development Director Tom Flaherty. “This $9 million Port Infrastructure Development Program grant will support Alter’s expansion plans and underscores the value of public-private partnerships advanced by the Rock Island Port Authority.”
Alter Logistics serves barge, truck and rail modes of transportation at their intermodal facilities in Rock Island, Davenport and St. Paul, Minn. Its facilities include warehousing and outside storage capabilities and work with all major barge lines and rail carriers to facilitate modal exchange between rivers, roads and rail for a wide variety of bulk products.
