Illinois bill would mandate data centers pay host cities

A plan in Illinois could have data centers pay the cities where they're located.

Senator Sue Rezin has proposed a bill that would make data centers pay a tax to what's called a Community Benefits Agreements. Senate Bill 4203 would create a local fund that would be rebated back to residents on their property taxes. Rezin considers this a tool to help communities decide what's best. Rezin says the bill will come up next month when lawmakers return for veto session.

The Social Security Administration announced Wednesday, October 14, that benefits will increase 3.6% for 2027. For retired workers, that means an average increase of about $75 a month -- roughly $900 over a full year.
