Illinois bill requires data centers to report electricity use

A bill in Illinois would make data centers account for all the electricity they use.

The Data Center Energy Accountability Act (House Bill 5826) would require data centers to report power use hour by hour and make or buy clean energy credits to cover it all. Centers that fall short would pay a fee, and those that don't comply could face losing their power. The bill's sponsor is Democrat Jay Hoffman.
