DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa bettors wagered $290.2 million on sports in September, while licensed casinos and sports wagering operators generated nearly $27.9 million in state taxes, according to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.

Sports wagering revenue reached $23.75 million, up 4.58% from September 2025, even as the total amount wagered remained virtually unchanged. Bettors received $266.5 million in payouts.

Online betting accounted for more than 95% of September’s sports wagering handle, totaling $276.1 million. Another $14.1 million was wagered at retail sportsbooks.

“Historically, football is the driver of the highest-activity months across the sports wagering calendar,” commission Administrator Tina Eick said. “Iowa’s legal and licensed operators are experiencing steady early results as the 2026 season begins.”

Sports wagering generated $1.6 million in state taxes, an increase of 4.81% from a year earlier.

At Prairie Meadows in Altoona, sports wagering handle totaled nearly $9.3 million. The operation reported about $847,900 in sports wagering revenue and $57,200 in state taxes.

Meanwhile, Iowa’s casinos reported $128.2 million in adjusted gross revenue, down 2.63% from September 2025. State casino gaming taxes increased 6.78% to $26.27 million.

The year-over-year comparison is affected by a change in how casino revenue is reported. Beginning in July 2026, the commission stopped including promotional play in monthly and fiscal-year casino revenue figures. As a result, the September 2026 revenue total is calculated on a different basis than the September 2025 figure, which included promotional play, making the reported decline not a direct like-for-like comparison. Iowa began gradually phasing out taxes on promotional play in fiscal year 2022 under legislation passed in 2021.

The commission reported 19 state-licensed casinos operating in Iowa and 10 licensed entities offering online sports betting in September.
