Heavy rainfall causes wastewater backups, runoff across Iowa
By Natasha Keicher,
17 hours agoIOWA -- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said it has received several reports of wastewater entering waterways statewide.
After multiple days of heavy rainfall, many communities across the state are experiencing flooding impacts. One such impact, the DNR said, is wastewater collection systems becoming overloaded and causing sewage water to back up into basements, streams, and other areas.
The DNR said collection systems with aging infrastructure are particularly vulnerable.
In Wapello County, several inches of rain in a short amount of time caused a stockpile of pressed wastewater sludge to become saturated near an agricultural site northeast of Kirkville. Water runoff in the area caused some of the biosolids to make their way into Cedar Creek. DNR staff are on-site monitoring the situation, the DNR said.
So far, the DNR said it hasn't been notified of any impacts to municipal drinking water supplies or fish kills.
The DNR is advising Iowans to stay out of streams, creeks, and other waterways until floodwaters recede.
